Estoy enamorada de San Francisco! La verdad, es una de las ciudades mas lindas, diversas, e interesantes que hay. Es súper amigable para los vegetarianos, en cualquier restaurante hay opciones, y ofrece un menú mundial increíble! Aunque la ciudad es chica, todos los barrios tienen su propia personalidad, gente, comida y cultura… y la idea es disfrutarlos todos. Estuve una semana asique no pude hacer TODO, pero les cuento lo que mas me gusto de cada barrio. Espero que disfruten el viaje “virtual” tanto como disfrute mi viaje real.

San Francisco it’s truly one of the best cities in the world. It’s filled with history, diversity and interesting people. It’s very vegetarian friendly, with options everywhere you go! Even though it’s a small city the options are endless and each neighborhood has its own personality, food and culture…a and the idea is to walk around and enjoy a little of everything. I was there for a week, so I couldn’t do it ALL (even though I tried), but here are a few of my favorite spots. I hope you enjoy the “virtual” trip as much as I enjoyed the real one. 

Bask (42 Colmbus Avenue)

Tengo una par de amigas en San Francisco y me llevaron a este bar/restaurante para happy hour. Al parecer en San Francisco happy hour es un must los días de la semana, después de las 5pm. Bask tiene una barra llena de tapas y sangría y vinos a $3. Se los súper recomiendo para unos traguitos!

I have a few friends in the city and they took me here for happy hour, which seems to be a pretty classic thing to do in the city after 5pm. Bask offers a great variety of tapas, sangrias and has a great wine selection for afternoon snack and drinks. 

  

The Grove (690 Mission St (between Annie St & 3rd St)

Este lugar es súper relajado. Tiene un ambiente cool con muebles vintage y reciclados, como el banco de una iglesia y almohadones grandes con telas estilo navajo. El menú tiene de todo y la comida sencilla pero muy buena. Yo fui a desayunar y me comí un riquísimo bagel integral con huevo y queso suizo, acompañado de una taza enorme de café. Es un lugar genial para llevar tu computadora y trabajar ahí un buen rato mientras almorzás una de sus geniales ensaladas. Hay varios Groves en la ciudad, así que vistita uno en tu próximo viaje a San Francisco.

This place is very cool and laid back. It as a great atmosphere with all vintage and re-purpose furniture pieces, like a church bench. The menu has it all and it’s simple but good food. I went there for brunch and had a very good scrambled egg bagel with a large latte. It’s a cool place to take your laptop to and chill or have a great salad. There are a few “groves” around town so make sure to visit one on your next trip to San Fran.

Chinatown

Una vez que entras en Chinatown vas a sentir el shock cultural, es como otro mundo. Para una inmersión profunda en el Barrio Chino, asegúrate de examinar los productos y mercados en Stockton Street (entre Columbus y Broadway). Ahí es donde los locales hacen sus compras. Los productos son bastante peculiares pero es uno de esos lugares donde encontrás de todo. Hay miles de restaurants, todos súper auténticos, asique antes de entrar a cualquiera, preguntale a los locales donde se come rico, yo hice eso. La comida china no es conocido por sus platos vegetarianos, así que pregunte acerca de ofertas especiales vegetarianos. Yo comí en el R&G Lounge, porque nos lo recomendó una señora:

Once you enter the Chinatown neighborhood you’ll feel the culture hit you. For deep immersion into Chinatown, be sure to examine the many produce and live markets that line Stockton Street (between Columbus and Broadway). That is where the locals do their shopping. The foods and stores were definitely peculiar, but the markets are definitely interesting. You’ll find all kinds of restaurants, but ask around and find out were the locals eat. Chinese food is not known for it’s vegetarian plates, so ask about vegetarian specials.

R&G Lounge: (631 Kearny St)

Comí acá. Tienen un menú súper autentico con productos, mariscos y pescado fresco. Esta lleno de empresarios y gente del área… asique es bueno seguro! Pedí unos fideos de arroz con vegetales, que estaban un poquito aceitosos a mi gusto pero igual ricos. Pedite los Arrolladitos primavera que también están buenísimos! Durante el almuerzo esta lleno de gente que viene desde el trabajo por los bajos precios, asique preparate para esperar un ratito!

This is where I went. They feature a pretty authentic menu of fresh produce and fresh fish. It’s packed with locals, so that means it’s good! I orders Noodles and vegetables, and although they were a bit oily for my taste they were wonderfully made. The spring rolls are also a must! The downstairs gets packed at lunchtime with locals gorging on the cheap rice plates, so be prepared to wait a while. 

Haight & Ashbury

Este barrio es uno de mis preferidos. En los años 60 era El lugar donde todos los jóvenes llegaban a buscar paz y amor (alias hippies). Algunos lo encontraron y otros no pero la vibra del pasado todavía se siente es sus calles. Aparte de la vibra, también podes ver unas casas victorianas divinas, podes visitar los miles de lugares vintage sobre la calle Height, tiendas con productos “cannabis”, gente rara que quedo en los años 60 y lugares con vinilos buenísimos… solo camina toda la calle Haight!

This was my favorite are in town. Back in the mid-1960s it was a place where young people came to from all over the world in search of love and peace (aka hippies). Some found it and some didn’t, but today it’s worth a visit just to see the beautiful Victorians that surround the area, the amazing vintage shops, the cool “cannabis shops”, the bizarre people that hang out there since the 1960s, record shops… just walk up on Height and be amazed!

The Mission

Este barrio no es muy posh pero es ridículamente cool e interesante, lleno de tienditas raras, restaurantes latinos y un perfecto para ver hipsters (los hipsters son los chicos/as cool y modernos que siempre están vestidos raros, tienen barbas y creen que son únicos). Camina sobre Mission Street y te vas a encontrar con taquerías, pupuserias, mercaditos, panaderías salvadoreñas, salones de belleza, talleres mecánicos y centros para enviar dinero a cualquier país de Centro América. Desde 1950 que las familias mexicanas y centroamericanas se ubican en este barrio.

La calle 24th  es una de las mas ricas, culturalmente hablando, y llega hasta la calle Dolores y Valencia, donde ahora hay gente joven y cool ocupando las calles. Entre la 16th y Dolores hay muchos barcitos y en la calle Bryant hay un montón de restaurantes de moda. Yo fui a una taquería que me recomendó una amiga:

This area is not upscale at all but it’s insanely cool and nice and filled with cool stores, Latin restaurants and a great place to go hipster watching. Stroll along the Mission’s wide avenues and you’ll be struck by the profusion of taquerias, pupuserias, produce markets, Salvadoran bakeries, salon de bellezas (beauty salons), auto-repair shops and check-cashing centers that post rates for wiring money to Guatemala and Nicaragua — all evidence of the Central American and Mexican families that have been settling the Mission en masse since the 1950s.

Generally speaking, the 24th Street area is the culturally rich heart of the Mission, the stretch from Dolores Street through to Valencia Street is young and cool, the area around 16th and Valencia streets hops with nightlife and the industrial area near Bryant Street has some hip, trendy restaurants. I visited a taqueria shop recommended by a friend:

Taqueria El Farolito (Mission and 18th)

Este lugar es una típico lugarcito de locales, lleno de trabajadores y gente del barrio que sabe donde comer rico y barato. Me pedí un burrito vegetariano, que la verdad esta buenísimo pero era demasiado grande! Era del tamaño de mi antebrazo… asique la próxima mejor comparto!

This is a typical local joint, filled with workers and Latin people that know where to get the best Latin food in town for not a lot of money. I ordered the vegetarian burrito and it was filling and delicious, yet too large for me! It’s seriously the size of a forearm… so try to share with someone if you can, or eat one and go to sleep later!

Dolores Park

No te pierdas este parque! Es un parque chico pero genial para relajarte un rato (y más después de comer un burrito gigante!). Tiene vistas a la ciudad y la gente que lo visita es bastante extraña (no agarres caramelos de extraños tiene un nuevo sentido… ya que ofrecen todo tipo de “caramelos para adultos”… ojo!). Enfrente del parque hay una heladería que me dijeron que es increíble! Se llama Bi-Rite Creamery. Lamentablemente no probe ningúno porque había una fila tremenda… pero si vuelvo lo pruebo!

Make a stop in Dolores Park and chill there for a while. It’s a great spot and has a great view of the city. People can get pretty strange here (don’t take candy from strangers will have a new adult meaning in this park since they offer all kinds of “adult treats”) but it’s great for people watching! There is a really trendy ice-cream shop right in front of the park Bi-Rite Creamery that promises to be one of the best in town. I couldn’t make it because the line was about 1 block down, but they offer strange flavors and everyone says it’s a must!

The Marina

Esta área es súper cool y un poquito posh. Queda cerca del agua y de parques como Fort Mason. Tiene muy buen shopping y restaurantes lindos (camina sobre Chestnut St.). Hay un montón de bares/restaurantes que son divinos pero un poco caros a mi gusto. Te cuento mis preferidos:

This area is pretty upscale and cool. It’s near the water and cool parks like Fort Mason. It offers great shopping and cool restaurants (just walk on chestnut street). The bars in the area are cool but can get a bit pricey. There are many restaurants to visit and even more bars, but I just made it to few:

Off The Grid 

(Todos los viernes de 5pm-10pm, durante el verano)

Esto es un mini festival de carritos de comida. Esta muy de moda y los carritos son mucho más lindos y gourmet de lo normal. Yo fui al de Fort Mason Center, pero revisa el calendario antes de ir para ver cuando y donde podes disfrutarlo. Tienen de todo: empanadas, sándwiches vietnamitas, dumplins, tacos… y casi todos ofrecen una opción vegetariana. Llega temprano porque las filas son tremendas… o llega tarde y tomate unos traguitos mientras haces la fila y quédate toda la noche!

(Every Friday from 5pm -10 pm, only in summer)

This very trendy and hipster friendly food truck meet. I went to the one on Fort Mason Center, but you should check out their calendar online and see which one you can catch. During the summer they do them at this location every Friday from 5 to 10pm. They have form tacos, to Vietnamese sandwiches, to Argentinean empanadas, and all kinds of delicious quick foods. The ingredients are amazing and the food is too, but lines can get crazy if you don’t get there early. They also have drinks, so you can make a night out of it.

The Tipsy Pig (2231 Chestnut Street)

Esta bar es divino! No comí, pero dicen que la comida es típicamente Americana. Tiene un ambiente cool y mucha gente linda. Te recomiendo tomar unos tragos en la terraza y disfrutarlo con amigos.

This is a bar, so I didn’t have any food here, only drinks, but it has a great atmosphere and a beautiful open garden to hang out in. This spirited bar makes this a good place for a fun evening with friends. 

Roam (1785 Union Street)

Este lugar tiene la mejor hamburguesa vegetariana que probé en mi vida. Tiene un menú muy bueno y un montón de tipos de hamburguesa y opciones. Yo me comí la hamburguesa vegetariana estilo “Chalet” (con rúcula, champiñones y queso suizo) en un pan de trigo integral y fritas de calabaza (se me hace agua la boca sólo de pensarlo!). La hamburguesa esta hecha de remolacha, quínoa y ricas especias. Los ingredientes que sirven son riquísimos y súper frescos igual que el ambiente. Ideal para un almuerzo de domingo o “linner” (almuerzo y cena combinada). No te pierdas esta hamburguesa, y menos las fritas de calabaza!

This place has the best vegetarian burger I ever had. It has a great menu and a great variety of burgers. I had the veggie burger Chalet style (with arugula, mushrooms and Swiss cheese) on a whole-wheat bun with sweet potato fries (my mouth waters just thinking about it!). The burger is made with beets and quinoa and other great spices I couldn’t figure out. The ingredients in this place are top of the line and the atmosphere is cool and calm, great for a Sunday lunch or “linner” (lunch and dinner combined). Don’t miss this burger if you are in town!

Greens (Building A, Fort Mason, (415) 771-6222.)

Este restaurant queda en Fort Mason Center, sobre el agua, y es uno de mis restaurantes vegetarianos preferidos. Es un restaurant “vegetariano elegante” con vistas divinas y un menú que cambia todos los días dependiendo de lo que haya en estación. Trata de conseguir una mesa en la pared que da a la marina, así tenes vista al agua y al Golden Gate. También tienen un excelente servicio, una lista de vinos buenísima y un menú súper creativo. Reserva con anticipación porque siempre esta lleno!

This is also in the Fort Mason Center, and it was one of my favorite vegetarian restaurants ever. It’s a “fancy vegetarian” place with amazing views and a daily menu to blow your vegetarian mind. Try to get a spot next to the west-facing wall so you can look straight out toward the Marina and the Golden Gate Bridge. They have a five-star service, nice wine selection and creatively designed, totally scrumptious vegetarian food. Make sure to make a reservation because it’s always packed. 

Sausalito

Podes camina, llegar en bici o manejar sobre el Puente Golden Gate para llegar a Sausalito. Es largo el camino, pero vale la pena! Las vistas son impagables! Sasualito es un pueblito a las afueras de San Francisco, mucho más familiar y cosas espectaculares. Yo fui al barrio Tiburón y comí en el Sam’s Anchor Café, mirando a la marina:

You can either take a bike or drive over the Golden Gate Bridge to get here. It will be a ride but it’s worth it. The views are insane and, where else are you going to cross such a beautiful bridge! Sausalito is a town just in on the other side of the bridge. It’s very family oriented and has a cool and nice laid back spot. I went to Tiburon, which is a neighborhood on the bay and ate at Sam’s Café:

Sam’s Anchor Cafe

Este lugar es el típico restaurante de marina, con una variedad de mariscos y pescados envidiable y una ubicación única. Me comí un sándwich de Portobello que esta regular, pero me imagino que lo mejor ahí son los pescados y mariscos…asique si no sos vegetariano lo vas a disfrutar mucho mas!

It’s a typical seafood place on the bay but with a priceless location on the Marina. The views and atmosphere are very cool for a sunny day and for a nice bloody Mary. I had a Portobello mushroom sandwich, that was pretty good, but I guess I would have to eat seafood to get the real picture of their menu. 

Bay to Brakers

Es difícil describir este loco festival/carrera con palabras, pero si vas en Mayo no te lo podes perder! Se hace una vez al año (este año fue el 20) y se supone que es una carrera desde la Bahía hasta La Playa (7 millas), pero a través de los años se ha convertido en una fiesta loca de disfraces. Te podes disfrazar de lo que sea y la idea es levantarte a las 5 am, ir a un Bar y empezar a disfrutar del día con amigos caminando por todo San Francisco como un loco. Tomas y bailas durante las 7 millas hasta llegar a la playa! Fue divertidísimo pero cuidado con los nudistas que están por todos lados!

This crazy festival is a must have if you are there during May. It’s once a year (this year it was the 20^th) and it’s supposed to be a race, but since San Francisco does nothing normal, it became a crazy costume walking festival from the bay to breakers. You have to dress up as anything you like or just with a weird wig or headband and walk the 7 miles to the beach. You drink and dance along the way and it is one of the best funniest days I had. Beware of the naked people and crazy ones… but you will have the best time!
